Reasoning AI: When to Pay for a Model That Thinks

Gemini 4 Argon scores 96.5% on scientific reasoning. Does that mean you need a reasoning model everywhere? The tasks that justify one, and the ones that don't.

An AI model that correctly answers 96.5% of PhD-level science questions: that is Gemini 4 Argon's score in October 2026. It is tempting to use it everywhere. Bad idea: a reasoning model costs more, answers more slowly, and adds nothing on most office tasks. The real question is knowing where it makes a difference.

At a glance

  • A reasoning model thinks in steps before answering: more reliable on complex problems, but slower and more expensive.
  • In October 2026, Gemini 4 Argon reaches 96.5% on GPQA Diamond; Claude Sonnet 5.5 answers fastest (21 s) and GPT-6.1 Sol costs least ($0.021).
  • Save reasoning for multi-step, high-stakes tasks. For writing and summarizing, a standard model is enough.

What is a reasoning model, in practice?

A reasoning model is an AI model that "thinks" before answering: it breaks down the problem, tries out approaches, checks its calculations, then writes its answer. A standard model produces its answer in one pass.

A comparison helps. Ask a colleague for the capital of Spain: they answer right away. Ask them whether a 40-page contract complies with your general purchasing terms: they take an hour, reread, annotate. The reasoning model does the second kind of work. Paying for it to do the first is a waste.

What do reasoning benchmarks measure?

OpenRouter publishes two reasoning tests:

BenchmarkWhat it testsModels testedBest quality
GPQA DiamondPhD-level science questions, designed to resist a simple web search162Gemini 4 Argon, 96.5%
VGI-BenchMultiple-choice questions about long videos: what was shown, said, or never happened54Seed 1.6, 66.2%

Source: OpenRouter Benchmarks, last run on October 14, 2026.

The contrast is telling. On written reasoning, the best models come close to perfection. On understanding long videos, the best one still gets only two answers out of three right. AI can summarize a training video or a recorded meeting, but its precise answers ("who said what, and when?") need to be checked.

Which reasoning model should you choose for your priority?

On GPQA Diamond, the three criteria point to three different models:

Your priorityTop model (Oct 14, 2026)Result
The best qualityGemini 4 Argon (Google)96.5%
The lowest costGPT-6.1 Sol (OpenAI)$0.021
The fastest answerClaude Sonnet 5.5 (Anthropic)21 seconds

For a finance team that reviews 20 files a month, quality comes first. For an internal tool queried 5,000 times a day, cost and speed become decisive. The right model is not the one at the top of the ranking; it is the one that meets your quality threshold at the best cost.

Which tasks justify a reasoning model?

TaskIs reasoning useful?Why
Writing an email or a LinkedIn postNoWriting quality does not depend on reasoning
Summarizing a meeting or a documentNoA standard model summarizes very well, and faster
Analyzing a balance sheet and spotting anomaliesYesChained calculations, consistency across line items
Checking a contract against an internal policyYesClause-by-clause comparison, exceptions
Building a schedule under constraintsYesMany constraints to satisfy at the same time
Troubleshooting a failure from a technical manualYesHypotheses to test and rule out
Sorting tickets by categoryNoSimple, repeated task: unit cost comes first

A simple rule of thumb: if a human employee would need more than 15 minutes and a draft to do the task, reasoning is worth the price. Otherwise, it is not.

How do you avoid paying for reasoning where it adds nothing?

The most common risk is not a lack of power; it is paying for too much of it. An employee who uses the most powerful model to rephrase their emails burns credits with no gain in quality. Three habits:

  1. Set a cost-effective default model for everyday use.
  2. Open up reasoning models to the teams that need them: finance, legal, engineering.
  3. Track usage by team to correct overuse.

This is what a multi-model platform with governance makes possible. GENIAL gives access to more than 30 models (GPT, Claude, Gemini, Mistral, DeepSeek, Kimi, Qwen) and controls model access team by team. You can also connect your own API keys or your local models. The principle is explained in our article on AI model routers and multi-model platforms.

On the budget side, keep in mind that an AI bill is managed through usage, not licenses: we explain why in the AI bill is the wrong question.

Where should you start?

List the five longest tasks of your finance, legal or technical teams, and test them with a standard model, then with a reasoning model. The quality gap will show you where reasoning pays off. Frequently asked questions

What is a reasoning AI model?

A reasoning model is an AI model that breaks a problem into steps and checks its work before answering, instead of producing the answer in one pass. It is more reliable on complex problems (calculations, logic, analysis of technical documents), but slower and more expensive per answer.

What is the best AI model for reasoning in 2026?

According to the GPQA Diamond benchmark published by OpenRouter on October 14, 2026, Gemini 4 Argon (Google) delivers the best quality, with 96.5% correct answers on PhD-level science questions, out of 162 models tested. GPT-6.1 Sol offers the best value ($0.021) and Claude Sonnet 5.5 the best speed (21 seconds).

When should a business use a reasoning model?

Use a reasoning model when the task requires several steps of logic and a mistake is costly: financial analysis, checking a contract for compliance, technical troubleshooting, planning under constraints. To write an email, summarize a meeting or rephrase a text, a standard model is enough and answers faster.

Can AI analyze a long video?

Yes, but reliability is still limited in 2026. On VGI-Bench, a test of questions about long videos published by OpenRouter, the best model (Seed 1.6) gets 66.2% of answers right. AI can locate passages and summarize a video, but its precise answers need to be checked.
